The Northfield Center - Sagamore Hills Fire District is comprised of the former Northfield Center Fire Department. In 2010, the townships of Northfield Center and Sagamore Hills formed a new district to provide high quality and professional fire suppression and emergency medical services to the residents of the 2 townships. The department is made up of 35 sworn members who staff the station 24/7 with 3 personnel under the direction and leadership of Fire Chief Frank Risko. The fire district responded to 1509 calls during 2012, covering a geographic area of 17.1 square miles and 14,000 residents.
30 members of the department are trained paramedics which allows the department to provide the highest level of prehospital care. Procedures involving advanced cardiac life support, defibrillation, advanced respiratory management and medication administration can be performed before arrival at the hospital. Bedford Hospital of the University Hospital Health System provides medical control. Monthly training sessions provided by UHHS and annual refresher courses allow members to stay up to date with the newest practices in prehospital care. EMS care is provided with 3 advanced life support rescue squads.
Fire suppression capabilities include 2 fully equipped fire engines, the newest being purchased in 2010. When extra manpower is needed for large scale incidents or multiple calls for service, it must be requested from neighboring departments and by recalling off duty members.
